Where it is

Algodões

A village of sand streets at the start of the Maraú Peninsula, on the southern coast of Bahia. A long stretch of beach lined with palms, still empty even in high season.

No avenue, no beach bar on every corner, no noise. What there is: calm sea, forest and real quiet.

The tide runs the day

At low tide the sea pulls back and opens natural pools in front of the beach: still, warm water with fish passing through. At high tide it becomes a swimming beach. The lowest tides fall near the full and new moon.

Getting here

Two routes. The one from Ilhéus is the shorter.

From Ilhéus

about 120 km, 2h to 2h30 by car

From Ilhéus airport, take the BA-001 towards Itacaré.
About 12 km past Itacaré, at the roundabout, turn right onto the BR-030.
From here the BR-030 is a dirt road. The turn for Algodões is about 16 km ahead.

From Salvador

set aside the day, ferry included

Ferry from Salvador to Bom Despacho, on Itaparica Island. About an hour.
Follow the BA-001 south, through Valença and Camamu, to the BR-030 roundabout.
From there it is the same 16 km of dirt road to Algodões.

The dirt road does not require a 4x4 in dry weather, but it worsens after heavy rain. Arriving in daylight is easier.
