My house is a place of rest, and at the same time it stirs ideas in me. I want to use it as a stage.

The house

Seventy square metres, open on both sides

A 70 m² pavilion with two en-suite bedrooms and a living room with an open kitchen. The linear plan opens the whole house to the view and to the surrounding vegetation.

Wide openings on both faces bring cross ventilation and daylight all day long. The deck set perpendicular to the main volume extends the living space outdoors.

The house stands above the ground. It stays permeable and dry over the damp of the mangrove, always aired from underneath, and sits lightly on the land.

Two bedrooms, one living space, the forest right outside

Each bedroom has its own bathroom. Living room and kitchen share a single span, with doors onto both decks. The floor is pale burnished cement throughout.

Architecture

Designed for an artist, built in five months

Designed by Cecchi Millan Arquitetura, with Giovanna Cecchi, Fernando Millan and Pedro Millan. Construction ran through 2020 and 2021, with the office in São Paulo following the engineer remotely.

Every supplier came from the peninsula itself. The joinery, the stools, the oars on the wall and the curtains were made by local craftspeople. The plan shifted on the site to preserve the native vegetation and one oil palm.

Where it is

Algodões

A village of sand streets at the start of the Maraú Peninsula, on the southern coast of Bahia. A long stretch of beach lined with palms, still empty even in high season.

No avenue, no beach bar on every corner, no noise. What there is: calm sea, forest and real quiet.

The tide runs the day

At low tide the sea pulls back and opens natural pools in front of the beach: still, warm water with fish passing through. At high tide it becomes a swimming beach. The lowest tides fall near the full and new moon.

Getting here

Two routes. The one from Ilhéus is the shorter.

From Ilhéus

about 120 km, 2h to 2h30 by car

  1. From Ilhéus airport, take the BA-001 towards Itacaré.
  2. About 12 km past Itacaré, at the roundabout, turn right onto the BR-030.
  3. From here the BR-030 is a dirt road. The turn for Algodões is about 16 km ahead.

From Salvador

set aside the day, ferry included

  1. Ferry from Salvador to Bom Despacho, on Itaparica Island. About an hour.
  2. Follow the BA-001 south, through Valença and Camamu, to the BR-030 roundabout.
  3. From there it is the same 16 km of dirt road to Algodões.

The dirt road does not require a 4x4 in dry weather, but it worsens after heavy rain. Arriving in daylight is easier.
